    Milkshape, seriously

It's the only software with proper support for gldsource .smd format, plus it has an integrated compiler in it, only 3ds Max has a plugin that allows it to export HL1 smds but sometimes it screws the bones in the model.

Plus, if you can't figure out how to use milkshape, you'll probably won't be able to use other advanced modelling suites.

    What about http://www.blender.org/

It's probably not going to be a one step solution, though; it's got great source support, but I'm not sure about GoldSrc.

Which means that Blender has not proper .SMD exporting and compiling options for GoldSrc??

Unless Source '.smd' files are compatible with the GoldSrc engine (after some searching around, it might), you'd have to export it to a file type milkshape can import, then export it.

I'd need someone to confirm it, but I did find this.
